How can I protect my kids from the sun?

Daylight savings is here! The weather is getting better and soon we will be spending more time in the sun.

You have been loving our sunscreens lately. Although the sun feels wonderful, we must be especially careful with our skin. Protect your families skin with Babu sunscreen and these sun protection tips.

Protecting your family from the sun

  • Sunscreen is recommended for babies from 6 months old. Try to keep younger babies in the shade to protect their sensitive skin.
  • This sun is strongest between 10am and 4pm. The October to April period has the highest UV levels in New Zealand. Try to keep young children out of the sun in these times. You can check the UV level on your weather app.
  • When looking for sunscreen, look for SPF30 that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Make sure to find a water resistant formula if you intend to use it whilst swimming.
  • Patch tests are good idea when trialing a new sunscreen (or any product for that matter). Apply a small amount of product to the back of baby’s wrist and wait to see if the appearance of redness or rash develops. If redness occurs, do not apply.
  • We recommend applying sunscreen 30 minutes before leaving the house, giving it time to soak into the skin.
  • Apply generously. It is recommended to apply one teaspoon per limb for children and seven teaspoons for adults. Babu sunscreen goes along way and absorbs well. Always better to go with too much than too little.
  • Reapply at least every 2 hours. If you are exposed to the sun for long periods of time, reapply more frequently to avoid burns.
  • Don’t forget to check the use-by and expiry dates. Expired sunscreen can separate and will not adequately protect you from the sun.
  • Store sunscreen below 30°C. Do not leave in your car or in direct sunlight on a hot day! This can diminish the effectiveness and longevity of your sunscreen.
  • Remember to slip, slop, slap and wrap! Cover up with loose fitting clothes, muslin wraps and hats to maximise your protection from the sun.
  • If possible, provide shade protection when venturing outdoors. This may be the cover of a pram, a muslin wrap draped over a play area or a sun umbrella.

Go out and soak up some vitamin D!
